Mouth Burn Commitment. It's the founder's own timed burn under a fixed protocol, stated as a personal baseline — the range on the label runs taco to raw, floor to ceiling. Not a Scoville number outsourced to a lab. A count of minutes, made by staying with the burn.
Why minutes, not Scoville
The stopwatch makes MBC a conscious experience of staying with your experience.
Scoville outsources the number to a lab. MBC requires presence — a quarter teaspoon, bare, a clean spoon leaving your mouth, and then the count. Not fighting the burn. Not distracting yourself out of it. Just being there while it does its thing.
That's why the unit is minutes and the ceremony is a stopwatch. The number is a byproduct of paying attention.

The Protocol
The MBC ceremony, in six lines.
Canonical — carry this exactly
- Clear your palate with something plain. A banana works. Questioning your life choices is optional but traditional.
- Take ¼ teaspoon, bare. No chip, no chaser, no mercy.
- Start the timer when the clean spoon leaves your mouth.
- Then stay. Don't fight it, don't distract yourself — the whole measurement is staying with your experience.
- Call it in good will: when the burn has subsided enough that you'd have to go looking for it. Echoes don't count — you're timing the fire, not the smoke.
- Report your minutes. The leaderboard runs on honor. So do you.
Taco to raw
The range runs from on-food to bare.
Every label carries a range in minutes — a floor and a ceiling. The floor is taco: what the burn looks like when the sauce is doing its job on actual food. The ceiling is raw: the bare-spoon Protocol number, which is the officially rated one. The rank badge is pegged to that raw ceiling.
On food, expect roughly half the commitment. That's friendly guidance from watching hundreds of tasters, not a formula and definitely not a promise. Your minutes may vary; that's the whole game.
The ranks
Four tiers, one open-ended horizon.
Codes appear as tier + raw ceiling — ADF9, CDF13, EDF28. Rank ladder, always in this order: Damn Fool, Adventurous Damn Fool, Complete Damn Fool, Enlightened Damn Fool.
